02Waemok Village Tourist AttractionWaemok Village is the only place in Korea where you can see a sunrise, sunset, and moonrise, all from the same vantage point and as such is recommended by Suga, a member of the world-famous ‘BTS.’ The name of the village, ‘Waemok’, (heron neck) is derived from the way its coast protrudes eastwards while Namyang and Asan Bays cut deep inland to create an indentation like a heron’s neck. If you look at the map, Waemok Village sits on a peninsula reaching north into the West Sea. As this coastal protuberance faces east, it allows visitors to see both sunset and sunrise from the same spot. And, as it has both a sandy beach and rocks, visitors can also enjoy swimming and rock fishing.

03Solmoe ShrineThe Solmoe Shrine is Korea’s National Historic Landmark No. 529. Its name ‘Solmoe’ originated from the old Korean words for ‘the pine trees (sol) forming a moe (mountain)’, and it is the birthplace of St. Andrew Kim Daegeon, the first Korean Catholic priest. It is the place where four generations of martyrs lived, including Father Kim Dae-geon's great-grandfather Kim Jin-hu, great-grandfather Kim Jong-han, father Kim Je-jun, and Father Kim Dae-geon. It is also known as 'Korea's Bethlehem.'

04Sinri ShrineThe Sinri Shrine, which with its mesmerizing and beautiful scenery, sometimes called an inland Jeju Island, is where the largest believer community was formed during the Joseon Dynasty’s Catholic Persecution period. It is the residence of the Bishop Daveluy, the only bishopric residence from the persecution era that still in its original location and shape. After his arrival in Ganggyeong with Father Kim Daegeon in October 1845, Bishop Daveluy was active in Joseon for 21 years until his martyrdom at Galmaemot in 1866. While living in seclusion in the house of Thomas Son Chasuhn, an influential Catholic in the Naepo region, he wrote, and with the help of Luke Hwang Sok-du, translated books on Catholicism into Korean. He also collated the deeds of Joseon Catholic churches and martyrs. These materials later became the basis for Dallet’s 'History of the Korean Catholic Church' and also contributed decisively to the acknowledgement of the 103 Korean saints.

05Hapdeok CathedralHapdeok Cathedral, the first parish church in Chungcheong, houses the early history of Korean Catholicism. When it was built in Sanggung-ri, Godeok-myeon, Yesan-gun in 1890, it was named Yangchon Cathedral. It was renamed Hapdeok Cathedral when it purchased the 400㎡ of land and moved to the current location in 1899. Then, in 1929, Father Perrin built a new Gothic cathedral. When the new Hapdeok Cathedral became independent in 1960, the name was changed from Hapdeok Cathedral to the Old Hapdeok Cathedral, before reverting to Hapdeok Cathedral in 1997, as it remains today.
