Three embankments of Dangjin

In Dangjin, there are three embankments (breakwaters) including Sapgyoho Embankment, which was the first embankment built in the 1970s, as well as Seongmun Embankment connecting Songsan-myeon and Seongmun-myeon and Daeho Embankment between Seongmun-myeon and Daesan-myeon. All of these embankments were constructed on the northern coastline of Dangjin, and play the role of supplying drinking water and agricultural and industrial water. Also, their construction resulted in the creation of large areas of reclaimed land. The Embankment Road refers to a road traveling along Sapgyoho Embankment, Seongmun Embankment and Daeho Embankment, which have all become popular tourist attractions.

A transformation of Sapgyoho tourist site into an eco-friendly marine park

“Embankment Road,” which is the fourth scenic site among the nine scenic sites of Dangjin is a 47km road that is perfect to go for a drive. It begins from Sapgyoho Tourist Site, which is close to the Seoul National Capital Area. A waterfront deck and an observatory have been built on the tourist site so that tourists can enjoy a pleasant walk and the magnificent scenery along the Embankment Road. There is also a place where people can enjoy recreational sports such as a basketball court and seawater pool.

The three embankments and the three coastal attractions of Dangjin

When you drive along Sapgyoho Embankment, Seongmun Embankment, and Daeho Embankment, you will come across the top three coastal atractions of Dangjin, which are Sapgyoho Tourist Site, Waemok Village known for its stunning view of the sunrise, and Dobido, a.k.a. Marine Resort Area. Go for a drive along the Embankment Road and check out the three embankments and the three coastal attractions of Dangjin that will stop you in your tracks with their exquisite beauty.

Sapgyoho Embankment is the starting point for a drive along the embankments from Sapgyoho Tourist Site through the marine park, where you can enjoy a nice, relaxing walk and take a look at the embankment construction memorial tower, all the way to Dobido, where you can shed off all your mental and physical fatigue.

When you drive along Sapgyoho Embankment from the Sapgyoho Tourist Site on National Road No. 38 toward Seongmun Embankment, the national road will end at around the 20km point where there is a three-way intersection that connects to Local Road No. 633. Here, take a right turn and drive for 2km to arrive at another three-way intersection. Drive toward 11 o’clock to pass by a drainage floodgate of Daeho Embankment, and you will see a vast lake along Seongmun Embankment toward your right. Park your car in the parking lot in the middle of the embankment and climb up the seawall to take in a refreshing view of the sea. The construction of this 10.6km embankment resulted in a water source of 9.1 million tons of agricultural and industrial water as well as the creation of 1,650ha of farmlands.

After passing by Seongmun Embankment, you can get to Daeho Embankment past the Port of Janggo, which is famous for holding Silchi Festival every spring. Along the way, you’ll reach Waemok Village, which is known for presenting a spectacular view of the sunrise as well as the beautiful sunset viewed from Seongmunsan Mountain. From Waemok Village, you can witness the exquisite seascape and enjoy the beauty of Gukhwado Island off the shore.

Past Waemok Village, you can drive along National Road No. 38 toward Seosan to get to Dobido. Daeho Embankment, in particular, begins from the 3km point from the entrance of Waemok Village. When you drive for another 4.5km, you’ll reach Dobido Rural Resort Complex, which is known as a marine recreational attraction of Dangjin. Once an island in the past, it became part of the inland with the construction of Daeho Embankment. At the observatory of the resort complex, you will be able to take in a view of the one and only archipelago of the West Sea.
