Introduction
The Beogeunae Pilgrimage Route is the path of martyrs that has been used since the early days of the Korean Catholic Church: A pilgrimage path walked by our predecessors in faith. Centered around the Sapgyocheon River, a port formed deep inland, this is where the faith of Father Kim Dae-geon's family flourished, and it was the gateway and staging post for the activities of Western missionaries. It takes about 4 hours to walk the 13.3 km route from Solmoe Shrine, the birthplace of Father Kim Dae-geon, to Sinri Shrine, which houses the historic sites associated with Bishop Daveluy, the 5th diocesan bishop of Joseon. This trail has won awards such as the Asian Urban Landscape Award in 2016 and the Road to Walk of the Month in 2019. Since 2018 it has also offered a stamp tour, which has further enhanced the route’s popularity.
If you complete the pilgrimage stamp tour by passing through a total of 10 checkpoints, you can receive a completion stamp and a souvenir. Stamp tour booklets can be collected at three locations: the Solmoe Shrine cultural tour guide office, the religious goods shop at Hapdeok Cathedral, and the Hapdeok Suri Folk Museum. In addition, in October 2010, the Beogeunae Pilgrimage Route signed a business agreement with the ‘Korea Santiago Pilgrims Association’, the official domestic certification body for the Santiago Pilgrimage Route, solidifying its position as Korea’s representative pilgrimage route. The pilgrimage route comprises cultural heritage sites and historic Catholic sites such as the Hapdeokje Reservoir Monument, the birthplace of Won Si Jang & Won Si Bo, the Tomb of the Unknown Martyr, etc. In this manner, the Beogeunae Pilgrimage Route is an attractive destination offering faith, healing and the scenic beauty of nature.
