Introduction

Along with the Yeonannamdaeji Reservoir in Hwanghae-do and the Byeokgolje Reservoir in Gimje, the Hapdeokje Reservoir is one of the three major reservoirs of the Joseon period. The Hapdeokje Reservoir, which is believed to have been built before the Goryeo Dynasty, is currently used as a farm reservoir. Only the long embankment, a curved structure, which was formerly used for water retention remains in its original form. In recognition of its excellence, the reservoir was not only designated as Chungcheongnam-do Monument No. 70 in April 1989, but also registered as a ‘World Irrigation Facility Heritage’ by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage in 2017. Nearby is the Hapdeok Suri Folk Museum, which was built to commemorate the Hapdeokje Reservoir and to respect the wisdom of our ancestors who long recognized the importance of irrigation. The museum displays irrigation & agriculture-related collections so that you can see at a glance the irrigation & farming culture of our Korean ancestors. In a departure from the museum convention of only offering visual displays, there are also about 20 irrigation/farming experience tools that visitors can pick up, feel and experience for themselves,

Restoration projects are currently underway at the Hapdeokje Reservoir, and the ecological environment is well preserved offering a habitat for endangered species such as the Seoul frog, the Suwon tree frog, swans (a Korean natural monument), and the Eurasian spoonbill. It has long been said that everyone should visit the Hapdeokje Reservoir at least once. To tempt people to do so, there’s also a nearby rural theme park that is popular with families. In addition to the floor fountain, this theme park is equipped with a straw-thatched pavilion, a traditional treadmill, a straw-thatched roof house experience center, and various landscaping facilities.

In addition, the ‘Hapdeokje Reservoir Ecotourism Experience Center’ has been established allowing visitors to experience, via realistic videos, the reservoir’s nature and ecology, which is registered as a World Irrigation Facility Heritage and a monument of Chungcheongnam-do. Here, using the latest technological equipment, visitors can experience and enjoy the flowers and animals living in the Hapdeokje Reservoir. Additionally, the Hapdeokje Reservoir Yeonho Cultural Festival is held every year in July when the lotus flowers are in full bloom. At this festival, visitors can experience the beautiful harmony of nature and people, tradition and modernity around the Hapdeokje Reservoir, the Suri Folk Museum, the Rural Experience Theme Park, and Hapdeok Cathedral.
