Myeoncheon Dugyeonju (rice & azalea wine), designated as National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Korea No. 86-2, was selected as the official banquet drink for the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit, and is truly famous as the best traditional wine produced by keeping the old traditions alive. Accordingly, the Myeoncheon Dugyeonju Wine Preservation Association is an organization that researches into, and strives for the production of, Myeoncheon Dugyeonju and the development of this traditional cultural inheritance. It also introduces this unique, highest-class, traditional folk wine to the public and at the Myeoncheon Dugyeonju Wine Training Center visitors can experience making Myeoncheon Dugyeonju for themselves.

Myeoncheon Dugyeonju is a liquor with over 1,100 years of history and is enveloped in legends. It is said to be made according to a traditional secret recipe, using azalea flowers from Mt. Amisan and spring water from Ansaem spring as its main ingredients. Known as ‘the famous wine that has been around for a thousand years,’ Myeoncheon Dugyeonju is Korea’s first wine flavored with azalea flowers and is one of the three major Korean folk wines created, as such, with the utmost filial piety to its long history and traditions.

The legend of Bok Jigyeom, the founding figure of the Goryeo Dynasty, and Dugyeonju Wine

General Bok Jigyeom, who was credited with founding the Goryeo Dynasty, is associated in legend with Dugyeonju Wine. When the general became ill and did not get better even after using all kinds of remedies, his young daughter climbed Mt. Amisan and prayed for 100 days. Then, a celestial spirit appeared before her and said, “Brew a wine with the azalea flowers in full bloom on Mt. Amisan, but only brew it with water from Anseam (nowadays this is the well behind the Myeoncheon Elementary School), make the general drink the wine for 100 days, then plant two ginkgo trees in the yard and nurture them with sincerity to cure your father. The girl followed this advice, and the general made a full recovery.
