Introduction
The Sinri Shrine, which with its mesmerizing and beautiful scenery, sometimes called an inland Jeju Island, is where the largest believer community was formed during the Joseon Dynasty’s Catholic Persecution period. It is the residence of the Bishop Daveluy, the only bishopric residence from the persecution era that still in its original location and shape. After his arrival in Ganggyeong with Father Kim Daegeon in October 1845, Bishop Daveluy was active in Joseon for 21 years until his martyrdom at Galmaemot in 1866. While living in seclusion in the house of Thomas Son Chasuhn, an influential Catholic in the Naepo region, he wrote, and with the help of Luke Hwang Sok-du, translated books on Catholicism into Korean. He also collated the deeds of Joseon Catholic churches and martyrs. These materials later became the basis for Dallet’s 'History of the Korean Catholic Church' and also contributed decisively to the acknowledgement of the 103 Korean saints.
Additionally, Sinri was recognized as the most important Catholic community during the Catholic Persecution period. It was the largest Christian village in Joseon and was also an entry point for clandestine missionaries. The Sinri Shrine, which had greatly influenced the spread of Catholicism in Korea, is also known as the Catacombs of Joseon (after the secretive church during the Roman Empire’s pagan era). Bishop Daveluy was able to discharge this role in Sinri was because he was closely connected to the Paris Foreign Mission Society in China through the developed Sapgyocheon waterway system and because of the cultural openness of the Naepo region. The Martyrdom Art Museum in Sinri Shrine is Korea's first Catholic icon museum and is built in the image of the Catacombs in Rome. It displays portraits of five saints and paintings recording their martyrdom. Outside the Martyrdom Art Museum is the Martyrdom History Park that has lawns with small chapels where you can pray and honor the lives of the five saints.
The Sinri Shrine houses Korea’s only martyrdom art museum. This also has an observation deck from where visitors can take in the beautiful vista.
Città Nuova

Inside the shrine there’s Città Nuova, an old grain warehouse renovated into a cultural space used as a lounge, art gallery and café. The Sinri Shrine is the last leg of the famous Dangjin pilgrimage. Here pilgrims and visitors alike can rest at Città Nuova enjoying a cup of coffee while admiring the golden fields surrounding the shrine.
